WHAT IS A "GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION"?

A “geographical indication” is the geographical name of a country, region, or specific place that is used to designate a product coming from there, and whose characteristic qualities are exclusively or essentially due to the geographical environment, including both natural and human factors. They are often recognized by international agreements and can be registered or unregistered trademarks. The word Champagne is a good example: it is used to designate the sparkling white wine originating from the Champagne province in France.
